GreenField Ethanol building world’s first industrial scale municipal waste-to-ethanol facility

TORONTO

GreenField Ethanol, Canada's largest ethanol producer and Enerkem, a leading gasification and catalysis technology company, have partnered together to build the world’s first industrial scale facility that will produce next generation biofuels from municipal solid waste by the end of 2010.

GreenField Ethanol and Enerkem will be jointly responsible for building and operating the $70 million plant which will be built in Edmonton, Alberta. The plant is the first to be announced by the partnership since their earlier statement this year of plans to jointly design, build and operate commercial next generation ethanol plants. A second plant is in development.

“This next generation biofuels (ethanol) facility will offer drivers a new choice in transportation fuels," said Donald Pierce, President of GreenField Ethanol's Advanced Biofuels Group. "GreenField is thrilled to be leading in the development of next generation ethanol along with its partner Enerkem, a world leader in providing innovative technologies that reduce greenhouse gases and help build a sustainable future.”

As Canada moves closer to a federal Renewable Fuel Standard for transportation fuels, GreenField Ethanol continues to show leadership and vision by actively pursuing both the research and development of next generation cellulosic ethanol, along with such opportunities as the Enerkem project. GreenField is committed to broadening Canadians’ fuel choices and such a partnership will provide Canadians with a much-needed alternative to oil that will help mitigate prices at the pump while also reducing harmful greenhouse gases and air pollution.
